Paramedic Information

Below you will find an overview of the paramedic course schedule, curriculum, cost break down, prerequisites and screening process. Please read through and familiarize yourself with our program.
Course Hours
The Paramedic course is approximately 1049 hours. The following is a breakdown of hours:
Classroom Didactic Hours :

Flex Schedule
For the convenience of our students, DC Public Safety Academies operates a flex schedule. This schedule is geared towards EMS and is Kelly schedule compatible. Students have the option to come to one of two classes a week depending on their work schedule. In addition the student is required to attend a mandatory two day class once a month. Students must also complete 500 hours of clinical and vehicular rotations. The student is required to schedule these hours outside of class time throughout the paramedic course. DC Public Safety Academies has a full time clinical and vehicular coordinator that works with the student utilizing a state of the art online system to facilitate scheduling and completion of requirements.
Curriculum
The Paramedic course follows the NHTSA Curriculum and is approved by the Arizona Department of Health Services and Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Upon successful completion of the program the student will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exams. Completion of the Paramedic course alone does not certify a student for employment. Certification is controlled entirely by the Arizona Department of Health Services and Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Program Information
This course is open to all interested EMS personnel who meet the requirements listed below.
Acceptance into the program requires all prerequisites below be completed plus passing of the written exam and oral interview.
Pre-requisites
1. Each applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Each applicant must be certified in Arizona as an EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate before applying to the Paramedic Program.
3. Each applicant must provide proof of :
- Successful completion of a minimum 24 hour Hazardous Materials First Responder course. ( included in program, current Hazmat certification holders can provide copy )
- TB testing or chest x-ray with a negative result within 6 months of the application.
- Immunity to rubella (German measles) determined as follows:
- Persons born before January 1, 1942 are considered immune to rubella. Persons born on or after January 1, 1942 are considered immune to rubella if the person has a documented record of having received 1 dose of live rubella vaccine since June 1, 1969, on or after their first birthday, or the person has documented laboratory confirmation of immunity to rubella. Physician diagnosis is not acceptable.
- Immunity to rubella (measles) determined as follows:
- Persons born before January 1, 1957 are considered immune to rubella and mumps. Persons born on or after January 1, 1957 are considered immune to rubella if the person has a documented record of having received 2 doses of live measles vaccine since January 1, 1968, on or after their first birthday, or the person has documented laboratory confirmation of immunity to rubella. Physician diagnosis is not acceptable.
- Immunity to varicella (chicken pox) (requires a titer)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria ( within last 10 years )
- Proof of hepatitis B immunity (requires a titer) or evidence that you have declined the vaccination series. (Hepatitis B waiver form available.)
- ASSET Reading score of at least 41 or COMPASS score of at least 81 or equivalent on Nelson-Denney exam.
- Copy of current Basic Life Support (CPR) Healthcare Provider card.
- Health Insurance Card.
- Current EMT Basic Card.
- Proof of age 18 years or older. ( Driver's Lic., Birth Cert., or Passport.)
** All prospective students must complete and show proof of the above prerequisites before they will be permitted to make an appointment to take the entrance exam. **
Entrance Examinations
Once all prerequisites are completed and all documentation has been provided to DC Public Safety Academies, you will be permitted to set up an appointment to take the written examination consisting of multiple choice questions assessing EMT-Basic, general math and general Haz Mat knowledge. Each applicant shall complete the examination with a minimum score of 70% to be eligible to continue the screening process. Candidates successfully completing the written examination will participate in an informal oral interview with a 1 to 2-member panel.

Enrollment
For those students wishing to enroll in DC Public Safety Academies’ Paramedic Program, you must first go through the application process, which includes the application, meeting the prerequisites and passing the entrance exam. Upon approval, a $350 dollar registration fee is due. This fee is non-refundable and required for enrollment into the program. In addition, a $750 Clinical/Vehicular, lab fee is due. This enrolls you in the program and reserves your spot in the Paramedic program. The Clinical/Vehicular, lab fee is ONLY refundable up until 14 days prior to the 1st day of class. After this time period the Clinical/Vehicular, lab fee is non-refundable. The Tuition fee of $5,900 is due Paid-in-full prior to the start of the program.
Refund Policy
DC Public Safety Academies’ refund policy is as follows:
A student has 2 full class days, from the start of their program to withdraw from the program (i.e. please refer to DC Public Safety Academies’ withdrawal policy). At this point, $3500 of your tuition is refundable. This entitles the student to a $3500 refund and all other tuition and fees are non-refundable.
